Senator Byrd died at the age of 92 after serving almost six decades in office.
Byrd died after becoming seriously ill late last week after years of health problems. Senator Byrd died peacefully at around 3 a.m. at Inova Fairfax Hospital, according to reports.
Byrd considered himself a “hillbilly” and occasionally played the fiddle on the Senate floor. Robert C. Byrd grew up in poverty in West Virginia and brought more federal money and jobs to his beloved state.
Before his life in politics, Byrd joined a local chapter of the Ku Klux Klan. Senator Byrd apologized repeatedly for his past membership in the KKK saying it was one of the greatest mistakes in his life.
A replacement for Senator Byrd will be appointed by West Virginia Governor Joe Manchin to serve the remainder of Byrd’s term.
Our condolences to the friends and family of Senator Robert C. Byrd.
